Wash and Wax Is It Old Fashioned?
Most people think that the only way to detail a car is to wash and wax it. I used to be among that group. I pride myself in keeping my vehicles looking showroom new. So I've tried virtually every product on the market in my quest for the perfect shine!
So I get out the hose, bucket, sponge and car wash liquid. I wet the car with the hose. Then I wash a section at a time and rinse it off with the hose again. You know the routine!
Now that the car is washed, I grab a towel or chamois to dry it off. If it is hot outside, I have to hurry before the water dries and water spots form. This is particularly true if I'm in an area with hard water. As I finish drying, I look up to find water running down the side from under trim pieces that I couldn't aceess.
About an hour later I have ended the automobile washing portion of the exercise. Now it's time for the waxes and polishes. So I go to my stash of auto waxes on the shelf and find something I think will work.
I put the wax on the paint finish and rub until it hazes over. After a short while my arms and shoulders begin to ache from the elbow grease required to apply the wax. Again, if it's hot I have to hurry so I can remove the wax before the sun sets it into the paint.
The hardest part is yet to come. Removing the wax takes even more effort than applying it. By the time I'm finished, the whole day is shot and I am exhausted.
Sound familiar? This was my experience for years! I'm thinkin' there must be a better way!
Several years ago, after much research, I discovered this age old wash and wax practice of auto detailing could actually do harm to
automotive paints.
Or in some cases it just has no effect at all. It is important to understand the effects that this procedure can have on the paint.
Then we must look at the effects of
automobile washing
Finally the waxes we use can have negative effects on the finish. Typically waxes fall into three categories. They are
car silicone wax,
Teflon car wax
and
Carnauba car wax.
Each have some negatives that clever marketing has tended to conceal.
